Scientific Advisor

Thomas Lutz DVM, PhD is a leading preclinical researcher in obesity and metabolic diseases and he is Professor of Veterinary Physiology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland since 2004.

For the past 35 years He has been working in the field of research on the regulation of foodintake with a special focus on the pancreatic hormone amylin in the control of metabolism and also on the role of aggregating amylin in the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Thomas Lutz received his DVM degree in 1989 at the University of Berlin, Germany, his PhD degree in 1995 at the University of Queensland, Australia, and his habilitation at the University of Zurich in 1999.

He is the head of the group performing pre-clinical research in the field if amylin at the Institute of Veterinary Physiology and, currently, serves as deputy dean and dean for student affairs. He has been Interim director of the Institute of Laboratory Animal Sciences from 2013 to 2015.

Prof. Lutz’ research contributed substantially to the current knowledge of the biology of amylin and its effects on energy metabolism. This research also examined the interactions between amylin and other controls of metabolism, such as leptin, GLP-1 and sex hormones, and it forms the basis of various efforts to target the amylin system in the treatment of obesity, diabetes mellitus and other metabolic diseases.

Thomas Lutz supervised a large number of PhD, DVM and Master theses. The scientific publications mainly cover pre-clincal research but he has also been involved in some clinical studies. Overall, his publications comprise > 300 original and review articles, several of which were published in high-impact journals. > 11’000 citations, h-index 57 (web of science).
